Best Gift Ever...

One of the participants in my 30 Day Challenge has written me the most awesome poem based on today's workout.  Here it is...

Hey Lisa This one is for you:
This morning when I woke I had a voice in my head
It said come on girl get yourself outta bed
You’ve got 60 mins of cardio to do today!
And well those stairs- You will want out of your way!!
Then its onto the crunch and the darn AB
Hey, you wanted to get rid of the pesky flab.
Not done yet- pick out your favorite squat
I promise you your butt will look hot!
So that voice I heard was my inspiration-
Lisa my gift to you-- 22 days of perspiration!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much Lisa—That voice was you! You hard work is paying off-making my hard work pay off!

Changes are on their way...

Lots of changes upcoming for fall!!  It sure seems like a fall day out there today, are you kidding me, it is June?!

The first change you will notice is the switch from in person registration to on line registration.  You will be able to log in, sign up and register from the convenience of your own home 24/7.  If you are not signed up via online registration you will not be registered for the class.  Some class sizes will be limited for fall as I am making the switch to even smaller class sizes to allow for even more personalized attention.  It will be like having your own personal trainer, only shared with 4 other people, which is alot more cost effective.

There will also be a switch in programming, with regards to class length, types of classes available, and times.  I will be back teaching, as well as Lauren, Julie and Melissa.   I look forward to getting back into the swing of things full time again, and seeing you in class.  Please stay tuned for all the studio NEWS in an upcoming summer bulletin.

Thanks for stoppin' by...Lisa

Basic Stretches...

Here are a few basic stretches to get you going...try to hold each stretch for at least 20 seconds

Ball Hamstring Stretch...you can sit on the edge of a chair or bench as well. Hinge forward at the hip and support the upper body on the opposite thigh.  Gentle stretch, no pain in the knee or low back.

Ball Hip Flexor/Quad Stretch...seated on ball, or again edge of chair or bench, sit up nice and tall feet as shown.  You should feel the stretch in the front pocket area of the back leg.

Calf Stretch off step or block of wood.  Place balls of feet on step, and drop heels off step.  Hold.

Supine Hamstring Stretch...lay on ground, one leg bent, one leg in the air, you can place a rope or towel under the bottom of the foot in the air so that you can really straighten that leg.  You may need to move the leg further out from the body to get it straight, there should be no shaking of the leg in the air.  If you wish, you can straighten the bottom leg as well.  No stress in the knees, or low back.  Head resting comfortably on the ground, no straining to reach that leg!!

Piriformis (deep butt muscle) stretch...as shown.  You can place the foot on a table, couch, wall. Instead of hanging on with hands, you can loop a towel or rope in between the legs to pull that bottom leg in.

Sidelying quad stretch.  As shown.  If needed instead of grabbing the foot, loop a towel or rope around that ankle to support that leg.

Pec Stretch.  As shown. Keep shoulder blades down, no shoulder shrugging.  Place hand on wall and gently turn the upper body away from the wall.

Kitchen Sink Stretch...you can hang onto the kitchen sink or a post, drop the bum back and gently release through the shoulders.  You should feel a gentle stretch in the low back, mid back, along the sides.

Ball Hip Flexor...just another variation, gets a bit deeper and more into the obliques.

Road to Recovery...

Well my friends, I thought this day would never come (hope I don't jinx it), but I am finally really starting to feel better. For those that don't know, I had been quite sick all of 2011. Speed forward to my cardiologist appointment in December-I was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm that put me in the high risk for rupture category! Talk about putting on the brakes! I am sure I saw my life flash before my eyes. I was scheduled for open heart surgery in January 2012 at Vancouver General Hospital. Thankfully everything went well, and here I am 9 weeks later ready to get back into the swing of things. I do have to be very careful still. I have to go for an MRI in June or July to determine what is going on inside & how everything healed. As well, this will determine how much work I can take on again, if I can go back to really getting into and teaching my classes as opposed to just instructing. This has given me LOTS of planning time for classe, and boy do I have some fantastic classes scheduled for the fall. Stay tuned for that announcement! As far as what is going on around the studio right now- Lauren is teaching some great classes over spring break. Monday's & Wednesday's 9:30 a bust your butt circuit class, as well as on Tuesday & Thursday 6:45. You still have time to check out the classes next week. Spring break special $10 per class. Then the schedule begins the following week. Not on the schedule is the newly announced Friday Morning Kick Your Butt class, it will be a 9:30 am time slot, just working on dates for that - keep your eye on that class, as it fills super quickly! I am so very thankful for the awesome group of Instructors that took over for me in my absence. Without them, I don't know what would have happened to the business. Thanks go out to Lauren Parker, Carmel Kachkowski, Julie Patan & Melissa Berrisford. You guys are awesome! I am collecting names for a June Men's Citness Class, dates and time TBA. Also, taking suggestions & input for scheduling, classes, formats, etc. These are your workouts, so I want to hear from you to see what you would like to have offered. Here are some suggestions I have had: Men's Classes 30 minute classes Open Studio time - for example between 6:30 am - noon, Monday, Wednesday & Friday, you could pop in at any time during those hours and do a pre set up workout that is geared to take you 30 minutes. Smaller group size classes - 3-5 participants Saturday Morning classes Informational workshops BCRPA approved workshops (still working on it, had nobody register last time!) Julie and I will be offering the REAL SOLUTIONS Weight Management Program again in the Fall. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program, please be sure to let me know. If you require some motivational assistance while you wait for the classes to start up again, please contact me so we can work something out! Don't lose the motivation.Lots of exciting changes for that program in the fall as well. I certainly look forward to getting back and seeing all your smiling faces, and seeing some new ones! Sign up for classes soon at Summerland Physiotherapy. Some classes are already full! Gotta be quick... That is all for now, talk to you soon.
