Pilates and Golf...

Think about this - during just one round of golf, how many times have you bent over the ball to place it or pick it up. How much twisting, usually in one direction, while swinging that club. Do you come away with a back ache? You know, Pilates might just work for you.

Pilates can restore your core strength, which supports your whole body providing balance and natural movement. Pilates targets these muscles in every exercise. Pilates will also improve flexibility, which in turn, improves blood flow. And, Pilates will help with alignment, working the whole body, engaging all the muscles at the right time.

Now here's a word you don't want to hear during a round of golf (or in any sport, in fact) and that's Cheating! Did you know that your body cheats, without you knowing it - that's why we can get back ache or stiff shoulders. Your body will use a stronger muscle to perform an activity, if the one it's supposed to use is too weak or fatigued.

Think of a roll-up (not that you'll use those much in golf) but if the abs are weak we'll hunch the shoulders and push the chin into the chest, in a (misguided) effort to lift up. Well similar things happen in sports. If your core can't support you sufficiently while swinging the club, then we'll use whatever muscle is available to help - that's why you begin to ache.

Pilates exercises aim to use the right muscles to do the job, producing a better quality and efficient movement.

The rotational stresses of the golf swing can place considerable pressure on the spine and muscles. Also poor flexibility and muscle strength can cause minor strains in the back that can easily become severe injuries.
