Why Diets Fail...

Picture the typical diet - you are required to deprive yourself of the foods you love and show off your incredible sense of "willpower" around those that aren't dieting. Research shows that chronic dieters are especially susceptible to overeating when faced with an abundance of tempting foods, specifically because they view eating as a constant act of self-control (Vohs & Heatherton 2000)

It is suggested that you make smaller, more meaningful changes in your diet. For example, cutting out just one type of unhealthy food, or reducing your calorie intake by 200 calories a day, or adding in 30 minutes of exercise per day. These type of changes are not as painful and do not require as much self-control, so you will be able to sustain the changes for longer.

Allow yourself to take a break from "willpower" - take one day off per week to have some of your fave foods. This may replenish your resources to resist temptation!! You have to give yourself a little satisfaction now and then.
