It really is not necessary to adopt a rigid military stance in order to stand effectively. Practising good posture can ease your breathing, clear your mind, use your energy effeciently as well as reduce your chance of injury.
Start out with a few minutes each day, and gradually you will be doing it without even noticing.
1. Stand or sit tall. Imagine stretching from your tailbone to the top of your head, in opposite directions. Try moving up your rearview mirror in your vehicle so that you have to sit up straight to see in it.
2. Keep your chin parallel to the ground. Try to keep your ears aligned over your shoulders, your shoulders in line with your hips, your hips in line with your knees and your knees in line with your ankle bones.
3. Pull that bellybutton in and up!! And engage your pelvic floor muscles. Think about stopping the urine midstream and holding that contraction there. That supports everthing up from the bottom.
4. Straighten your upper back by lifting your chest and slightly bringing those shoulders back.
5. Make sure your workstation is set up appropriately. A good chair, a telephone headset, computer desk or work desk at the right height for you. Have an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist or even an Ergonomics Specialist visit your office to revamp it.
Straightening up can also have a slimming effect. Good body alignment can shave off 5 pounds!! Holding correct form takes alot of work, and your will firm up your oblique abdominals 2% more than if you slouch. Resisting the urge to slouch can help to prevent back and neck pain.
